Double perspective
"Doble perspectiva" is a collaboration between myself and a journalist I met during my cultural immersion program in Cuba. It began with a simple question: what is Cuba to you?
My perspective of the island nation 90 miles away from the United States had been changed completely after the trip and I had hundreds of photographs from my travels. Still, I knew I only had a small understanding of this country was to the people who live there and my perspective would always be one of an outsider.
Having met Walkiria Juanes Sánchez, a then journalism student I met through the program, I wanted to get a written perspective from a citizen to balance the visual perspective a tourist would typically take home and so I asked the simple question, and received much more than I had expected. I translated her words into English and made use of the shared national colors of both or homelands to communicate the message of two perspectives.
I decided to digitally print the entire book block on newsprint and the cover on corrugation board using a Vanderburg printing press, with an exposed hand smith-sewn spine to emphasize the raw emotion and nature of the individual points of view.

Who We Are
This self-published book was a research project that began with the word "Imperialism." Over the course of two semesters, I investigated and catalogued evidence from primary and secondary sources that helped the reader have a better understanding of how the United States involvement in several Central American nations over more than 100 years can be directly connected to the immigration crisis that we are experiencing today. The book is tied together with a single red line running horizontally throughout every page. It is both an extension of the timeline the book is prefaced with that shows every documented case of U.S. interventions in Central and South American countries.
